Walking picks with Emma: A circular walk around Trelissick and the River Fal

The first weeks of 2023 had me wondering whether it’d be a good time to build an Ark, such were the volumes of rain we had! Elated to see a hint of drier weather arrive with some long-awaited high pressure, this change in weather spelled one thing – adventure!

Living in an area of outstandingly picturesque scenery to which the masses flock during holiday season for that very reason, it’s frustrating when the weather doesn’t cooperate. Much to the delight of my little dog Mabel, I decided to capitalise on the dry days and head out on a yomp, opting for a gentle 3.5mile (5.6km) circular walk at beautiful Trelissick, where we were treated to sunshine, beautiful scenery and the first signs of spring awakening!

Setting off from the car park at Trelissick Gardens, we ambled down through open parkland and were treated to sweeping views of the Fal Estuary and Channals Creek where seabirds happily hopped in the shallows. Following the edge of the estate on the wooded footpath, we trod a level route alongside the River Fal, under twisted oak and sweet chestnut trees growing on the banks.

The river a constant focus through the bare trees, we enjoyed the vessels moored and passing-by on the water. On reaching the King Harry Ferry we headed up into the North Wood, the path gently levelling off to run alongside pretty and secluded Lamouth Creek. Flanked by woodland, there’s hidden treasure here - the remains of an Iron Age fort lie in the trees above!

Heading uphill once again, we zigzagged up a steep wooded path, finding ourselves at the Old Lodge gatehouse. Here the skies opened up as we left the canopy of the woodland, and followed the drive through the informal parkland before arriving back at the car. Thankfully, we had no call for an Ark on our walk, but next time I might just hop on the Ferry for a mooch on the Roseland.
