A wet February followed wet January, and constantly cleaning my muddy boots, trousers and dog
had become a little tiresome! A firm believer in seizing opportunity, mid-February treated us to a rare dry and sunny day, so I dropped everything and took my excited pup out for a good coastal yomp around the Rosemullion headland!
Low tide at Maenporth saw families playing happily on the beach in the half-term sunshine as we joined the coast path. In and out of pebbly, shaded tree-lined coves we rambled, the water a dazzling shade of emerald as it glistened in the welcome sunlight at Bream Cove. The coast path was still a boggy quagmire in places, but the dog and I cared not, as the day was so beautiful!
Through oceanside meadows the path wound, the land and leafless trees in their winter slumber rolling down to meet the calmly lapping clear seawater. At Sowans Hole near Mawnan, the coastline
turned slightly more northwards, and we found ourselves walking above the banks of the Helford, the vista ahead; to the left The Lizard, and to the right, Helford across the expanse of sparkling water.
Passing several boat houses, the path after turning into The Helford was decidedly more genteel as we traversed grassy meadows, and hopped over ragingly fast streams. Mud and deep puddles at many of the numerous types of stile en route meant that my dog needed lifting over, and I was soon muddy! This was remedied with a piece of homemade banana bread, which we shared, and neither of us were worried about our grubby appearance after that!
Soon, pine trees towered above us at the edge of the land, and we found ourselves at the beautiful Grebe beach, lit in the glow of golden hour light – a perfect ending!
