The Start of Spring

While it may feel a little chilly still, spring has officially arrived, as 50 blooms of magnolia have been counted in each of the six great gardens in Cornwall.

With Cornwall’s fairly reasonable weather - well, when it’s not treating us to blustery rain and tempestuous gales - our county tends to feel that comforting hug of spring a little sooner than other parts of the UK.

This year spring was officially declared in Cornwall on Monday, 27th February, just a few days later than last year’s spring declaration date on 22nd February 2022. Since 2016, spring has arrived in February year-on-year.

This is because the six champion magnolia campbellii trees in Cornwall’s Great Gardens successfully reached 50 blooms, which marks the arrival of spring. Trebah Garden near Falmouth is one of those six gardens, and shared the news with their Facebook followers on the day spring was declared.

The other gardens are Trewidden, Caerhays, Heligan, Tregothnan and Trewithen.

So, with spring officially here, it’s the perfect time to get outside and make the most of the beautiful flowers that are beginning to bloom across the county. Whether you fancy popping down the road to Trebah Garden, a gorgeous sub-tropical garden based in Mawnan Smith, or a little further afield in one of Cornwall’s other great gardens, make sure you get out and explore the wonders of this glorious corner of the world, and all the simple pleasures that spring brings with it!
