MOR Group: Leading the way for offshore renewables

The Marine Offshore Renewables Group (MOR Group) was formed to promote the excellent supply chain businesses in Cornwall that can support the emergence of offshore renewable energy in Cornwall and the wider South West.

Working as a sub-group of Cornwall Marine Network, based in Falmouth, MOR Group aims to provide solutions for the emerging marine renewable industry. First established in 2012, the group, made up of a number of South West-based businesses, has gone on to work with stakeholders to plan and develop floating offshore wind turbines into the Celtic Sea.

The aim is to bring significant servicing work to offshore renewables to Cornwall. For example, Falmouth, with its natural deep water harbour, is a great location for supply chain businesses to serve the emerging offshore wind sector as the assembly, deployment, anchoring, servicing and inspection operations can be provided locally to this emerging and growing sector.

Chris Freer from Cornwall Marine Network said: “Falmouth harbour and bay is unique deep water, so we have the expertise and natural resource here. We’re a county that has been at the forefront of technology, and we’ve got that ‘can do’ attitude.”

There are 60 organisations that are members of the group, all based in Cornwall, who are working together to ensure this corner of the world is recognised for its innovation in the marine sector, combining skills and resources to ultimately provide solutions when it comes to offshore renewables. Staying true to their slogan, MOR Group is ‘championing Cornwall and the South West as an international centre of excellence’.

The network communicates each quarter at development meetings, allowing suppliers and developers to collectively bid for contracts and promote their services, creating even more opportunities to broaden the possibilities for marine renewable energy worldwide.
