Falmouth Book Festival: An event for authors, writers and bookworms alike

Falmouth Book Festival returns this October, promising an excellent line-up of authors, guest speakers and workshops.

Another string to Falmouth’s events bow, the festival was set up by Colin Midson and Helen Waters in 2021, having worked together on the Port Eliot Festival until it had to close in 2019. While the pandemic scuppered their plans, the pair finally took the plunge in 2021 and have had two successful years since, with hopes the event will become a ‘permanent part of the Cornish festival ecology’.

Director Colin said: “There are various ingredients that make it a perfect book festival location but most importantly it has a great independent bookshop and, of course, a University with renowned creative writing and journalism departments and lots of dynamic young students. It’s also a town with a really unique character.”

Appearances confirmed for this year’s festival include former Booker Winner Eleanor Catton, novelist Louis de Bernieres, and Nina Stibbe, author of the classic memoir Love Nina. The historian and podcaster James Holland will be joining the line-up, and the comedian and Radio 4 presenter Robin Ince will be talking about his new book Bibliomaniac.

People attending this year’s festival can expect to explore a range of themes that link Cornwall to literature, from history and mythology, farming and life here in Cornwall, to ocean conservation. The event is also being made accessible to children and young people in the area, with workshops in local schools, plus a series of free events in Falmouth Library. The children’s authors line-up will be announced closer to the time of the festival.

Falmouth Book Festival will be held from Monday 16th to Sunday 22nd October 2023. For the full line-up, tickets and information, visit www.falmouthbookfestival.com
