Autumn is the perfect time of year to delve into new, comforting recipes and, living in one of the food capitals of the country, Cornwall has some beautiful produce to explore to really tantalise your tastebuds - from fresh fish from our waters and meats from the rolling hills, to locally grown vegetables and some lovingly-made Cornish treats.
The community is lucky to have access to a wide range of incredible local businesses that grace the town centre here in Falmouth, and so searching for any ingredients for your autumn dishes, bakes and treats is made that little bit easier.
But why is shopping locally so vital? We caught up with the team behind the Food Barn at Tregew, based between Mylor and Flushing, who told us just how important support from the local community is to small and independent businesses and food producers.
Each Saturday, a tight-knit community of knowledgeable and friendly food traders from the area head to the Food Barn to welcome visitors, with a focus on providing locally sourced and sustainable produce ranging from meat, fish and cheese to bread, preserves and vegetables.
A spokesperson from the Food Barn said: “The local food producers and traders we have at the market are all independent businesses who provide so much more than simply their amazing produce for us to purchase. They are all part of our local community, their businesses support their families, their produce supplies our local restaurants, their values protect and nurture the land and infrastructure of Cornwall and their hard work and dedication provide jobs for local people passionate about food. The individuals who work in these businesses really are an inspiration and asset to Cornwall and a wonderful community to get to know.”
This autumn, the Food Barn will be bursting with local produce, plus they will have a mountain of locally grown pumpkins for families to carve whilst enjoying a coffee and a pastry - what could be better?
